Vasco da Gama (c1469-1524), Portuguese explorer and seafarer, was the first European to reach India by sea. This diary is a narrative of that journey, when da Gama’s ship, the Sao Gabriel set off from Lisbon and sailed via the Azores and Brazil, to the cape of Good Hope and the Malabar Coast of India.
